Barbie grows boobies...again?

Photobucket

So I'm sure some of you know about the doll from the 70s called Growing up Skipper. She was a highly controversial doll for her time. The concept of her was you'd turn her arm and she would grow breasts, ergo, she'd grow up. Now I personally don't see anything wrong with this doll and would have given her to any daughters I would have had. But I understand for the time that she was a bit shocking. It brought sexuality into your little girl's life when you just wanted her to stay an innocent little girl. Below is a video that talks more about this interesting doll.

So while you would think that this doll didn't do to well, far be it from Mattel to stray from their regular pattern of repeating their dolls from the past to try to get a hopeful successful repeat run with it. Enter Growing Up My Scene Glam dolls.

I honestly have never heard of these dolls and am bummed I missed out on the chance to own one. LOL!

I think the concept of this doll is way better than Growing Up Skipper. She grows several inches and grows breasts. You can change her make-up for a more mature look and change her shoes from flats to heels.

I'm guessing this doll didn't do to well either seeing it that you didn't really hear about it, but maybe I was just out of the loop around this time.

This time around Mattel changed the way their doll grew up. Instead of turning her arm you turn a crank in her back which makes her grow up and out. I like this concept and I think in the world we live in now young girls could have "gotten" it. Below is a video that tells more about the doll.

So tell me, did you know about this doll? Was I just out of the loop? And if you knew about it, what did you think about it? What did other people you knew think about them? Did you or do you own one? How did you or do you like it? The curious mind is...well...curious. :-D Ok kids, I'm off. I've had a kind of hard day and think I want to head back to bed. Just wanted to post about this real quick. Talk to you all later. Bye for now.

Loves ya,
Mouse

  1. This is a first, reading about this doll. I don't always hear about all the My Scene dolls though so it could just be that. My My Scene radar was not up.

I had a Growing Up Ginger doll - Skipper with brown hair and brown eyes, LOL. She was just a doll to me, then.

Kissing Barbie, though, I thought seemed kinda tarty. Shrug. I don't know why.

  3. Wow, I totally missed this one. But, then I wasn't really aware of much that happened during the My Scene era. Kinda surprised that none of us have even heard about it, though!

I know growing up skipper was all controversial and all, but I think people made way more out of it that their actually was. I mean, was it really going to warp little girls' minds and make them think that's how you grow breasts? I lot of what I've read is all about how sexist is what, since it was developed by men, and they think puberty is all about growing breast, blah blah blah. It is just a doll, you know. And I hate to break it to ya, but that's pretty much the only good thing about puberty. But hey, I'm not from that generation, so who knows.

Anyhoo, I'm rambling. It's cool how you can alter the makeup on the MyScene doll (although, how old does she start out? She comes with glue and scissors, it looks like grade school. Does she need makeup?)but it skeeves me out how she's wearing the same outfit as a little kid and an adult. But, I guess it's realistic, sadly.

    Cool find, thanks for sharing!

  4. I love em - purely for the novelty value! Skipper more so than my scene...cos I've always thought they were a little on the skanky side. I would have played with either of these when I was a kid and I'm pretty sure my 8 year old would be fascinated with them. As for being sexist...well girls do grow up and get boobs - so what? That's more physiology than sexism. I suppose that they could make a male version to even things up...but who would buy "Hairy Smelly Ken?".

  5. Ok, I have to wonder if this doll never made it to the shelves? How could we all not have heard of her? I'm sure we would have at least heard of her in the news? Hum. Well, either way, I do think it's silly such a stink is brought up over these dolls. Much like Pregnant Midge. It's a fact of life that girls grow up, get boobs, get pregnant, etc. I would have played with these dolls and would have let my kids play with them as well. So sad, but maybe one day we will be ready for this kind of doll. Maybe not. *sigh* Thanks for the comments all, and Dollybird, I totally agree about no one wanting to buy a "growing up Ken" doll. But it would be cool to see how they pull it off. Maybe the underarm hair could be done like those hair growing dolls out there. :-D I kid, I kid...kinda. ;-)

  6. Hi there, my girls own the "My Scene" doll. They picked it up at a second hand store with Grandma. She was fully clothed so I never noticed. However my husband went to take a shower and there was a sea of naked Barbie dolls in the bath tub from when the girls (4 year old twins) had had their bath earlier. He was collecting them out of the tub, and said "why are these Barbie's boobs so soft?" I was laughing at him for feeling the Barbie's boobs, then noticed they were made of a different material and almost felt realistic. I saw the crank on her back and twisted it, and the boobs popped out and the legs grew. We had a good laugh at how disturbing it was (and the fact she comes with what look like hooker shoes). I'm not a Barbie connoisseur by any means (the girls typically play with more masculine toys) so I Googled it out of curiosity and found this. Too funny! It obviously made the shelves though

Hello my lovelie, what's on your mind?
